The world of Aquaman is set to expand in film and TV with the addition of a live-action Aqualad series coming to streaming and it has an unexpected executive producer.

Variety is reporting an ongoing drama based on the origin story of Jackson Hyde is in development for HBO Max with Old Guard’s Charlize Theron serving as the head EP. No writing team has been announced yet, but the project is being co-produced by AJ Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas of Denver & Delilah Films.
It will take inspiration from the graphic novel You Brought Me the Ocean by writer Alex Sanchez and artist Julie Maroh. In that story, Jackson is a gay teen in New Mexico coming to terms with the death of his father and his sexuality. Naturally, he finds himself drawn to the sea as well despite being “land-locked.”
The Jackson Hyde Aqualad was created by Brandon Vietti, Greg Weisman, and Phil Bourassa, debuting in 2010 on the small screen and in the pages of DC Comics. Known in Atlantis as Kaldur’ahm, his first appearance was in the Young Justice animated series where he’s voiced by Khary Payton. Next, he premiered in issue #4 of Brightest Day.
Hyde’s been an impact player on Young Justice all the way up to the most recent fourth season, Phantoms. The action cartoon hasn’t been renewed so far for a potential fifth season.

If development moves forward, the Aqualad series joins HBO Max’s DC slate currently composed of Titans, Stargirl, and Doom Patrol; and that’s soon to include Dead Boy Detectives, Green Lantern, and The Batman spinoffs focused on Arkham and The Penguin.
Where Aqualad fits into the larger Aquaman franchise of the DCEU is not known but it will probably be unrelated since James Wan and Jason Momoa aren’t involved – at this stage, at least.
Momoa and Wan return to the ocean to make another splash in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is now coming out in March of 2023.
