Bank customers double-charged due to glitch – review statements.
Glitch at Wegmans Food Markets Leads to Double Charges on Credit Cards
Shoppers who recently visited a Wegmans Food Markets store may have been in for an unpleasant surprise when they checked their credit card statements. According to Fox Business, the 110-store chain based in Rochester, New York, has admitted that customers were double-charged for transactions on August 16.
One customer, Jessica Figueroa, took to Facebook to warn others about the issue. She wrote, ”So if you shopped at Wegmans yesterday, double-check your account. According to them, there was a system-wide error that caused a double charge for tons of customers. I just saw a double charge on my account.”
Another shopper also advised fellow customers to carefully review their bank statements. The exact cause of the mistake is still unknown.

Initially, Wegmans stated that the impact of the double charges was limited. According to WVIB-TV, the company issued a statement saying, “We recently identified an issue with credit card transactions processed on August 16th for both in-store and online orders. Some credit card transactions were inadvertently charged twice for their order, however, EBT and debit card transactions were not affected.”
Wegmans assured customers that they are working with their processor to reverse the charges. The company expects the duplicate charges to be reversed in the coming days, depending on the customers’ banks or issuers.
However, a later statement clarified that the impact was wider than initially announced. According to WHEC-TV, Wegmans stated, “Customers who swipe their debit card, select debit, and use their PIN number were not impacted. But those who swiped their debit card, then chose credit at the terminal, would have been impacted.” The issue affected all Wegmans stores.
A local bank affected by this issue is aware of it and had been notified by Wegmans they are working to reverse the charges.

While some customers like Ruth Siegfried were fortunate enough to avoid the double charges, they expressed concern for others. Siegfried stated, “It’s still hitting my bank account like a regular debit card transaction, so what if I was a person who did that — ya know, I have extra in my account, I have a line of credit on my checking account, but not everybody has that.” She emphasized the potential financial strain this glitch could cause for customers.
It is crucial for all Wegmans customers who made purchases on August 16 to carefully review their bank statements and report any double charges. The company is actively working to resolve the issue and reverse the duplicate charges.
