Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates Japanese traditions in tribute to historic present
Experience a Pink Paradise at Union Station’s Cherry Blossom Extravaganza
Imagine stepping into a blushing oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C. For one magical night, Union Station transforms into a pink-hued wonderland as it becomes the epicenter for Cherry Blossom admirers. The renowned Pink Tie Party not only kicks off the season’s festivities but also plays a critical role in sponsoring the myriad of complimentary events that define the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
“We showcase and honor the history of the festival, which is Japanese culture that definitely has inspired us,” – Diana Mayhew, President of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
A Gateway to Global Cuisine with a Cherry Blossom Twist
Join us on a gastronomical journey as you’re whisked away to international locales. Union Station’s entrance teems with life, capturing the essence of global metropolises. Local culinary artists draw inspiration from international hotspots — Paris to Tokyo — fusing traditional fare with a unique cherry blossom flair.
“Part of our focus is to involve local businesses and restaurants,” explains Mayhew. “Imagine savoring sushi and sake in our Tokyo-themed room, every bite a celebration of spring’s bloom.”
The Pink Tie Party: A Gala for Growth
The grandeur of the Pink Tie Party doesn’t merely lie in its lavish decorations or elaborate dishes. As the festival’s cornerstone fundraiser, it’s here that generosity blooms, enabling the season’s joy to be shared freely with all who visit the District of Columbia.
Cherry blossom trees stand in regal bloom on the Tidal Basin, symbolizing the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States. “Our goal is to spread the celebration from the Tidal Basin to every corner of the city,” says Mayhew. Funding from the event breathes life into school programs, kiting activities, and grand spectacles like the Pedal Palooza and the festive parade on Constitution Avenue.
Just when you think the charm of the nation’s capital couldn’t be more enchanting, over 36 million visitors are greeted each year by the delicate blossoms that represent renewal and the enduring bonds of friendship.
The National Park Service has announced an early treat this year — peak bloom has graced us on March 17, due to the warm whispers of an early spring. The cherry trees at the Tidal Basin are already putting on their annual breathtaking display.
But fear not should you miss the peak bloom. The National Cherry Blossom Festival, running from March 20 to April 14, offers an abundant bouquet of activities. Washington, D.C., teems with spots to sate your cherry blossom cravings, ensuring that no visitor leaves without flowers in their memories.
