Chicago Democrat urges gang members to restrict shootings to nighttime.
A Chicago Democrat’s Unconventional Proposal to Gang Members
In a bold move, Democratic alderwoman Maria Hadden of Chicago is reaching out to gang members with a unique request. She is urging them to limit their shootings and murders to the evening hours.
Hadden recently shared a proposal called “the People’s Ordinance” in her email newsletter. This proposal, put forth by the community group Native Sons, asks gang members to refrain from firing guns between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. You can read more about it here.
“We have to start somewhere,” says Tatiana Atkins, co-founder of Native Sons. “Our goal is to approach our city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. Things didn’t become this way overnight, and change won’t happen overnight.”
The primary aim of this proposal is to reduce the risk for individuals who are not involved in high-risk activities, particularly children. Tatiana Atkins hopes that parents will become more proactive in protecting their children if they know when gang shootings are likely to occur.
This proposal comes at a time when Chicago is grappling with persistent violence under its new Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson. Just last weekend, 23 people were shot, with four fatalities. The previous weekend saw the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl among seven others killed.
Since Johnson took office in May, crime has surged by 38 percent. Robberies alone have increased by 17 percent compared to the same period last year, according to police data. Over the past three years, robberies have risen by a staggering 30 percent.
It is worth noting that Johnson’s campaign advocated for “health professionals, not police,” to respond to crisis calls. He was also the only mayoral candidate who did not support filling the city’s more than 1,500 police vacancies.
Under the previous mayor, Lori Lightfoot, the homicide rate in Chicago skyrocketed by nearly 40 percent since 2019. Lightfoot has since transitioned to a teaching fellowship at Harvard University.
