Chicago Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot Loses Re-Election Race As Crime Soars

Chicago Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot After her first term was marred by crime, inability to recover after the pandemic and petty fighting, she lost Tuesday her re-election race.

Under Lightfoot’s tenure, the number of homicides has soared to “generational highs,” According to the FBI, there has been a marked increase in robberies and other property crimes like carjackings, muggings, and muggings. The New York Times.

Paul Vallas (ex-schools CEO) was the candidate that advanced to the second race. He received nearly 90% of votes and got 35% of all votes. Brandon Johnson (Cook County Commissioner) received 20% of votes. Lightfoot won only 16%.

The Times reported that Vallas was considered tougher than Lightfoot in tackling crime.

Dave Wasserman from the Cook Political Report (non-partisan) called the race before the votes had been counted.

“I’ve seen enough: Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson advance to the April 4 runoff in the Chicago mayoral race, defeating Mayor Lori Lightfoot,” Wasserman.
