The Chicago Police Department Investigates Alleged Sexual Relations with Migrants

The Chicago Police Department has launched an investigation into an unspecified number of officers over their alleged sexual relations with migrants. This development follows Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to transport approximately 2,200 migrants to Chicago after they crossed the border from Mexico into his state. Abbott has also sent over 23,000 migrants to New York City and Washington, D.C.

“These allegations are under investigation with CPD’s Bureau of Internal Affairs and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability,” CPD stated. The identities of the victims and officers have not been disclosed by CPD, but the investigation has been narrowed down to the 10th district within the total of 22 police districts. District 10 has a population where Hispanics account for more than 65% and was ranked third for use of force incidents in 2022.

“While this incident is under investigation by the CPD Bureau of Internal Affairs and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the City is committed to providing mental health support and resources to all those in need,” tweeted Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “The administration is also in the process of relocating all new arrivals from District 10 today in accordance with its ongoing strategy of moving asylum seekers out of all Chicago police stations.”

All arrivals have been transported to temporary shelters as of Saturday morning, according to Johnson.

Meanwhile, Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge No. 7 President John J. Catanzara Jr. dismissed the allegations as “nonsense.” In a video statement, Catanzara said, “There is no validity to the complaint. There is no basis or origin on where it originated from. We don’t have a victim’s name or anything — or victims, repeatedly or multiple — at this point. Who knows if it’s even true.”

Catanzara assured that the union would fully support the officers if their identities are revealed.

This investigation is the latest among the more than 11,000 misconduct investigations launched by CPD’s Bureau of Internal Affairs since Chicago entered the federal consent decree over four years ago.
