Chicago school officials mistake Secret Service for ICE – Washington Examiner
In a recent incident involving Chicago public Schools, officials mistakenly reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents attempted to enter an elementary school. This claim prompted a statement from ICE clarifying that thier agents had not visited the school; rather, it was U.S. secret Service agents who were there to investigate an alleged threat. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the city’s commitment to being a welcoming environment and urged the public not to spread unverified information that could incite fear. The confusion led to widespread media reports and comments from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who criticized the narrative surrounding the incident. The Illinois Republican Party accused Democratic leaders of furthering fear for political gain. Chicago Public Schools maintains a policy of not inquiring about students’ immigration status and will not allow ICE entry without a warrant.
Chicago school officials mistake Secret Service for ICE
(The Center Square) – Chicago Public Schools officials incorrectly said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents attempted to enter a South Side elementary school Friday and were turned away. After CPS made the announcement, ICE released a statement saying that its agents had not visited the school. Instead, school officials turned away U.S. Secret Service agents who had come to investigate an alleged threat.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the issue on X.
“Chicago will always be a welcoming city, we will always uphold the welcoming city ordinance, and we will always protect our students and every resident of our city. Today Secret Service agents, not ICE agents, were present at John H. Hamline Elementary School. While people across the city are worried about heightened immigration enforcement, it is imperative that individuals not spread unverified information that sparks fear across the city,” Johnson posted.
Before CPS acknowledged its mistake, numerous media outlets reported a raid by ICE and Gov. J.B. Pritzker commented on X.
“After a week of Republicans sowing fear and chaos, the first reports of raids in Chicago are at an elementary school. Targeting children and separating families is cruel and un-American,” Pritzker posted.
The Illinois Republican Party responded on X.
“Let’s talk about who is sowing fear. The Governor of this state, along with multiple Democrat officials, ran with unsubstantiated reporting because it is convenient to their political agenda. Not one has walked back their false claim. Who are the real fear mongers here?”
CPS does not ask for citizenship status and will not allow ICE agents inside without a warrant.
