Chicago Teachers Union President defends sending son to private school despite criticism.
The President of the Chicago Teachers Union Defends Decision to Send Son to Private School
The president of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is facing backlash for her decision to send her son to a private school. However, she is standing by her choice.
CTU President Stacy Davis Gates has enrolled her freshman son in a Catholic school on the South Side of Chicago.
In her defense, Davis Gates has criticized school choice and its impact on the resources available in Chicago’s public schools.
“It was a very difficult decision for us because there is not a lot to offer black youth who are entering high school in Chicago,” Davis Gates told WBEZ.
“In many of our schools on the South Side and the West Side, the course offerings are very marginal and limited,” she said. “Then the other thing, and it was a very strong priority, was his ability to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities, which quite frankly, don’t exist in many of the schools, high schools in particular.”
Despite her decision, Davis Gates has been a vocal opponent of school choice and private schools in the past, even going so far as to call school choice “racist.”
*School choice* was actually the choice of racists. It was created to avoid integrating schools with Black children. Now it’s the civil rights struggle of our generation? #BoyBye https://t.co/jYbiKV48aJ

Davis Gates has also strongly opposed the Illinois Invest in Kids program, which offers tax credits to those who fund scholarships for low-income students to attend private schools.

While critics have accused Davis Gates of hypocrisy, she argues that her decision is based on the limited options available for black youth in Chicago’s public schools.
She also condemned the news outlet SubX.News for revealing her son’s high school and publishing his name and picture, emphasizing the need to reject and decry such actions.
Davis Gates is not the only opponent of school choice to benefit from a private school education. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, strongly opposes school choice but herself attended a private school.
As the debate over school choice continues, Davis Gates stands by her decision, highlighting the challenges faced by black youth in Chicago’s public schools.
