China Conducts Live-Fire Exercises Ahead of Pelosi’s Potential Taiwan Visit
China said it would conduct live-fire exercises in the Taiwan Strait after warning Pelosi not to visit Taiwan, a self-ruled island that the communist regime sees as its own territory.
On July 28, China’s Maritime Safety Administration announced that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would conduct “live-fire exercises” in the Southeast waters of the Tanpai Province, in the narrowest parts of the Strait less than 80 miles from mainland Taiwan.

The exercises are the latest in a series of escalating military actions aimed at intimidating the democratic island, which has seen frequently Chinese aircraft incursions in its air defense identification zone for nearly two years. The drills also came ahead of a reported visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which the communist regime has vehemently protested against.
Pelosi would be the highest-ranking sitting U.S. official to visit the self-ruled island Taiwan in 25 years since then-Speaker Newt Gingrich visited in 1997.
The speaker’s office declined to confirm or deny the Speaker’s international travel in advance due to security considerations.
Threats
After reports of Pelosi’s trip emerged, the Chinese regime threatened “forceful measures” against the United States and Taiwan. Following those threats, President Joe Biden publicly said that Pelosi’s trip was “a bad idea” and that the military was against it.
Pelosi subsequently said that she had not spoken to Biden about the trip but that the military may have been concerned China would shoot down her plane.
