China limits drone-related exports due to US tech tensions.
China Implements Export Controls on Drone Equipment to Safeguard National Security
In a move to protect its national security and interests amid escalating tension with the United States, China has announced export controls on certain drone-related equipment. The restrictions, set to take effect on September 1, will apply to equipment such as drone engines, lasers, communication equipment, and anti-drone systems, as stated by the commerce ministry. The controls will also prohibit the export of civilian drones for military purposes. China’s drone manufacturing industry, which exports to various markets including the U.S., will be significantly impacted by these measures.
A spokesperson for the ministry emphasized that this expansion of drone control is a demonstration of China’s responsible stance as a major country, its commitment to global security initiatives, and its dedication to maintaining world peace. Relevant countries and regions have been notified of these measures. Notably, Chinese-based company DJI, which manufactures over 50% of drones sold in the U.S. and is widely used by public safety agencies, has not yet commented on the potential impact of these export controls.
China’s announcement of drone export controls follows its recent implementation of export controls on metals essential for chipmaking. These measures are a response to the United States’ efforts to restrict China’s access to key technologies. The ongoing trade tensions between the two countries continue to shape the global tech landscape.
