Chinese hackers breach US Ambassador’s email.
Beijing-linked Hackers Compromise U.S. Ambassador’s Email Account in Espionage Operation
According to the Wall Street Journal, hackers with ties to Beijing have successfully accessed the email account of the U.S. ambassador to China, resulting in a major espionage operation that may have compromised hundreds of thousands of U.S. government emails. This alarming breach was revealed on Thursday, shedding light on the extent of cyber threats faced by the United States.
In addition to the ambassador, Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia, was also targeted in this wide-scale spying operation, which was recently disclosed by Microsoft. The Wall Street Journal cites sources familiar with the matter.
State Department Investigation Underway
When asked about the reported breach, the State Department declined to provide specific details, stating that their investigation into the spying operation is ongoing. U.S. ambassador Nicholas Burns’s embassy in Beijing referred to Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent remarks, emphasizing that the United States takes any action targeting its government, companies, or citizens very seriously and will respond accordingly.
China Denies Involvement
China’s embassy in Washington has firmly denied any involvement in the cyber attacks, stating that they consistently oppose and combat all forms of cyber attacks and cyber theft. The embassy’s spokesman, Liu Pengyu, dismissed the speculation surrounding the source of the attacks as “groundless” and called for a professional and responsible approach to identifying the true culprits.
Microsoft’s Security Practices Under Scrutiny
Last week, Microsoft revealed that Chinese hackers exploited a flaw in its code and misappropriated one of its digital keys to steal emails from U.S. government agencies and other clients. The breach has raised concerns about Microsoft’s security practices, with officials and lawmakers urging the company to provide its highest level of digital auditing, known as logging, free of charge to all customers.
The State Department has taken immediate action to secure its systems after detecting anomalous activity. The investigation into this cyber attack continues, with experts working to identify the source and vulnerability in Microsoft’s cloud service.
