Chinese Air Force General-Turned-Congressman: Warning Time for Taiwan Invasion Reduced
China’s Military Activity Around Taiwan Intended to Desensitize, Warns US Congressman
According to Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), China’s frequent circling of Taiwan with fighter jets and warships is not just a show of force, but a deliberate strategy to desensitize Taiwan to Chinese military activity. The goal is to make Taiwan slow to respond if and when China decides to seize control of the island. In an interview with NTD News’ “Capitol Report,” Brig. Gen. Bacon emphasized the growing Chinese interest in controlling Taiwan and stressed the United States’ moral obligation to help preserve Taiwan’s independence from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Taiwan, a self-governing democratic country with its own laws, faces constant pressure from the CCP, which claims the island as part of China and has hinted at using force to take control. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) regularly conducts military exercises near Taiwan, with recent incidents involving the flight of 33 warplanes and the sailing of six warships in a single day.

Brig. Gen. Bacon explained that the continuous presence of Chinese forces around Taiwan serves to lower the warning time for an invasion. By making Taiwan accustomed to their military activity, China aims to make it difficult for the United States to determine when a real attack is imminent.
Despite the challenges, Brig. Gen. Bacon stressed the moral and strategic importance of supporting Taiwan. He highlighted Taiwan’s embrace of freedom, free markets, and its significant role in the global high-end computer chip industry. He believes that the United States should provide Taiwan with sufficient weapons to deter China and strengthen ties with the island. Additionally, he urged confronting China about its human rights abuses against ethnic and religious minorities.
Brig. Gen. Bacon, who was recently targeted in a suspected Chinese cyber intrusion attack, considers it a badge of honor. He believes that being targeted signifies that he is making an impact and that China fears his message.
How Countries Will Handle Taiwan Invasion
A wargame conducted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) revealed the potential costs of defending Taiwan from a Chinese attack. While an alliance of the United States, Taiwan, and Japan was able to win in most scenarios, the allies suffered significant losses in terms of ships, aircraft, and servicemembers. Lawmakers and experts have emphasized the need for the United States to arm Taiwan extensively before any conflict arises.
Concerns about China’s behavior are leading to increased cooperation among countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Japan and South Korea, historically not close allies, are now working together due to shared concerns about China’s threatening behavior.
Avoiding Government Shutdown
Looking beyond China-related policy, Brig. Gen. Bacon is focused on the upcoming battle over the U.S. budget. With a Democrat-controlled Senate and a Republican-controlled House of Representatives, passing a government budget may prove challenging.
