China’s Xi leaves meeting with Putin without pledging military cooperation
Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his three-day visit to Moscow without promising military assistance, as he and Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed their support for increased bilateral relations. The leaders’ discussions around Russia’s conflict with Ukraine had caught international attention, with speculation that China may provide military aid, though there was no mention of this during the talks.
Xi’s visit was highly anticipated and was choreographed to present an image of unity between the two countries amid growing tensions with the West. However, China has attempted to position itself as a neutral observer and has not condemned Russia’s involvement in the conflict.
On Tuesday, Putin expressed support for a peace plan proposed by China, which includes a ceasefire that would freeze the current battlefield positions in place, potentially solidifying Russia’s gains. U.S. officials have warned that this would allow Russia to refit and resupply its troops for future offensives.
While the two leaders did not discuss the peace plan, they affirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between their countries, jointly releasing a statement on deepening their partnership.
The White House dismissed the statement, accusing China of echoing Russian propaganda. And while U.S. officials have not seen evidence of China providing military assistance to Russia, they continue to call on China to use its influence to pressure Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
