Chinese and Russian militaries strengthen ties, reaching new levels of cooperation.
Chinese and Russian Militaries Link Up as Ties Between the Nations ‘Reach a New Level’
China announced on Wednesday that it has dispatched navy ships in preparation for joint exercises with Russia’s sea forces, signaling Beijing’s unwavering support for Moscow’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
Despite the escalating economic and humanitarian consequences of the brutal 16-month-long air, sea, and ground assault, China maintains its neutrality in the conflict. However, it has openly accused the U.S. and its allies of provoking Russia and has continued to maintain strong economic, diplomatic, and trade ties with Moscow.
The joint exercise, which involves more than 10 ships and over 30 aircraft, is set to take place in parts of the Sea of Japan in the coming days, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.
China has consistently supported Russia in opposing U.S. condemnation of the Ukraine invasion in international forums. However, it has made it clear that it will not provide arms to either side in the war.
The Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that Chinese ships had linked up with their Russian counterparts. The participating Chinese ships include the guided missile destroyers Qiqihar and Guiyang, the guided missile frigates Zaozhuang and Rizhao, and the supply ship Taihu. The Chinese ships are also equipped with four helicopters.
Russian participants in the joint drills include the frigates Gromkiy and Otlichnyy, which have been hosting visitors in Shanghai, China’s largest city and biggest port, for a week.
The drills will focus on ship-to-ship communications, maneuvering in formation, and maritime search and rescue, as reported by Chinese sources.
This military collaboration follows a meeting in Beijing between China’s defense minister and the head of Russia’s navy, marking the first formal military talks between the two friendly nations since the short-lived mutiny by the Russian mercenary group Wagner.
China has reassured Russia of its unwavering support since the uprising. Minister of National Defense Li Shangfu expressed China’s hope for increased exchanges, joint exercises, and other forms of cooperation to elevate defense ties to a new level, according to the Chinese Defense Ministry.
China boasts the world’s largest navy in terms of the number of hulls and significantly surpasses Russia in both size and technical capabilities of its navy.
Both countries have conducted a series of joint exercises and maneuvers since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, including collaborations between their air forces.
