Chinese State Media Exploits Washington Post Journalist Leaving America For Africa Over Supposed Racism

Chinese Communist Party-run media outlets have seized on a controversial Washington Post op-ed about a journalist deciding to leave the U.S. for Africa to escape racism.

Beijing’s decision to amplify the article, penned by staff writer DeNeen L. Brown, is the latest example of how the Chinese Communist Party seeks to exploit racial divisions in the U.S.

In the past, Chinese Communist Party-backed influence groups have worked to promote Critical Race Theory (CRT) in American classrooms and “racial justice” protests across the U.S.

The article highlighting Brown’s decision to leave America was published by Xinhua News Agency, the official state news agency of the People’s Republic of China, and distributed across several state-run news outlets.

China Internet Information Center, published under the auspices of the State Council Information Office, reposted the piece in addition to the People’s Daily Online. The People’s Daily is the largest newspaper group in China, owned by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Titled “African-American Reporter Decides to Leave U.S. to Escape Racism,” the write-up uncritically shares Brown’s rationale for deciding to leave the U.S.

“DeNeen L. Brown, an African-American writer for the Washington Post, has decided to leave the United States and start a new life in Ghana where “racism is not a constant threat,” it begins.

The article continues:

“Brown, who was born and grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma, wrote in an article that she “never really felt at home in America” and faced racism even when she was only a school girl.

In the article titled “The Case for Leaving America to Escape Racism” and published on the Washington Post on Monday, Brown said “Democracy appeared to be imploding, and the country seemed to be increasingly dangerous for Black people — although racist terror was embedded in the fabric of American history and is not a new phenomenon.”

The piece also linked Brown’s decision to the death of George Floyd, an event that the Chinese Communist Party has previously produced propaganda films about.
