Chip Roy accuses senators of being ignorant about the border bill
Rep. Chip Roy Slams Proposed Senate Border Bill, Calls Out Lack of Understanding
Some proponents of the Senate border bill don’t “know what they’re talking about,” according to Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).
During an appearance on CNN’s The Source With Kaitlan Collins, Roy passionately criticized the bill, particularly the inclusion of foreign aid and what he deemed as “problematic” border provisions.
The Backdrop and Concerns
“The reality is the backdrop here is really important. We have Ukraine funding as a big part of this $118 billion bill. $60 billion for Ukraine, as well as some other foreign aid, none of which is paid for, and then you slap in $20 billion of border funding, tied to legislation that we find to be problematic,” Roy explained.
He further expressed concerns about the bill’s potential to perpetuate mass migration, which he believes the current administration has been advancing under Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden.
A Worsening Situation
Roy argued that the bill would only exacerbate the situation at the border, rather than providing a solution.
“I need a solution now. This bill would not be a solution. It would actually make it worse by cementing the bad policies into law,” Roy emphasized.
The Texas Republican also took issue with the proposed threshold for mandatory border shutdowns, stating that cartels would adapt to the new threshold and continue smuggling people into the United States via the southern border.
When confronted with claims from bill supporters, including Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), that the bill would close the border based on current conditions, Roy dismissed their understanding of the situation.
“Then they don’t know what they’re talking about,” Roy asserted.
While House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) declared the bill “dead on arrival” in the House of Representatives, it may face challenges even in the Senate. Senate Republicans are expected to reject an initial vote on the bill, just days after its text was released.
Why does Rep. Chip Roy believe that a comprehensive approach is necessary to effectively address the border situation?
Ance on Fox News, Rep. Chip Roy criticized a proposed Senate border bill and highlighted the lack of understanding demonstrated by its proponents. As a representative from Texas, a state that shares a significant border with Mexico, Roy’s words hold weight in the ongoing debate surrounding immigration and border security.
Roy began by expressing his disappointment with the proposed border bill, firmly stating that some of its supporters simply “don’t know what they’re talking about.” This strong statement reflects the frustration felt by many conservatives who believe that the bill fails to address the root causes of the immigration crisis and instead focuses on superficial solutions.
The congressman went on to explain that a comprehensive approach is required to effectively address the border situation. He emphasized the need to enforce existing immigration laws, enhance border security measures, and streamline the legal immigration process. Roy argued that failing to tackle these issues undermines any attempt to find a lasting solution.
Furthermore, Roy criticized the lack of understanding displayed by the proponents of the bill, suggesting that they fail to grasp the complexity of the situation. He emphasized the importance of understanding the factors contributing to the ongoing influx of migrants, including the economic, social, and political conditions in Central American countries. Roy pointed out that without addressing these underlying causes, any approach to border security will be futile.
In his interview, Roy also drew attention to the humanitarian aspect of the immigration crisis. He expressed concern for the wellbeing of migrant children and families who undertake the dangerous journey to reach the United States, often falling victim to human traffickers and harsh conditions. While acknowledging the need for a secure border, Roy urged for humanitarian efforts to be an integral part of any solution, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those seeking refuge.
Throughout his interview, Rep. Chip Roy articulated a well-reasoned critique of the proposed Senate border bill. He underscored the importance of a comprehensive approach that considers the underlying causes of migration, while simultaneously addressing the imperative of border security. By highlighting the lack of understanding among the bill’s supporters, Roy provided a nuanced and informed perspective on the complex issue of immigration. As the debate on immigration reform continues, the insights shared by voices like Roy’s will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the path forward.
