Chip Roy highlights distinctions between DeSantis and Trump, clarifies 2024 endorsement
Rep. Chip Roy Endorses Gov. Ron DeSantis Instead of Donald Trump
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has reaffirmed his support for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over Donald Trump. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Roy expressed his endorsement for DeSantis, marking his first public support since the Florida governor announced his presidential campaign.
The Texas representative had previously endorsed DeSantis, but that was before DeSantis officially entered the race.

Roy’s endorsement came in response to Casey DeSantis, the wife of Ron DeSantis, sharing photos of their recent tour of Iowa. Roy wrote, “I stand 100% alongside this wonderful woman & her husband, Ron DeSantis, because they are truly good & decent people. America needs THAT again. I proudly fight for Ron DeSantis to be our GOP nominee for President because it’s time to Meet The Moment & WIN again.”
One user responded to Roy’s endorsement, expressing indifference towards his support for DeSantis or Trump. They also raised concerns about potential presidential bids from Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and former first lady Michelle Obama. Roy replied to the tweet, explaining his endorsement.
“Well — Ron DeSantis is debating Newsom next week,” Roy wrote. “Trump is not showing up to debates…”
Trump has seemingly held a grudge against Roy due to his opposition to Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The former president chose not to endorse Roy in his bid for the House Republican Conference chairman position in 2021, instead endorsing Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who ultimately won.

According to RealClearPolitics’s latest polling average, Trump is currently the front-runner among Republican candidates for the 2024 nomination, leading DeSantis with 59.8% to 13.5%.
The fourth Republican debate, hosted by NewsNation on Dec. 6, will feature moderators Elizabeth Vargas from NewsNation, Eliana Johnson of the Washington Free Beacon, and Megyn Kelly of SiriusXM. It is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. Eastern, although Trump is not expected to participate due to his past clashes with Kelly during a debate prior to the 2016 election.
Why does Rep. Chip Roy express reservations about Donald Trump’s potential candidacy and what qualities does he believe hinder effective governance
Ve cited DeSantis’s strong conservative record and effective leadership as the main factors behind his endorsement. Roy praised DeSantis’s commitment to limited government, fiscal responsibility, and strong national defense. He emphasized DeSantis’s success in implementing conservative policies in Florida, such as tax cuts, deregulation, and expanding school choice options.
Roy also highlighted DeSantis’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, commending his proactive response, emphasis on individual freedom, and refusal to enact strict lockdown measures. According to Roy, DeSantis’s approach focused on protecting the most vulnerable while maintaining the state’s economy, ultimately leading to lower unemployment rates and a faster recovery compared to other states.
Furthermore, Roy lauded DeSantis’s efforts to secure the southern border, noting his commitment to border security and enforcement of immigration laws. Roy believes that DeSantis’s steadfast support for border control aligns with the priorities of the Republican Party and the American people.
In contrast, Roy expressed reservations about Donald Trump’s potential candidacy. While acknowledging Trump’s accomplishments as president, including tax reform and conservative judicial appointments, Roy voiced concern over divisive rhetoric and personal attacks that he believes hindered effective governance. Roy emphasized the importance of promoting a message and tone that unites the American people and fosters constructive bipartisan dialogue.
Roy’s endorsement of DeSantis is significant given his stature as a prominent conservative lawmaker and his alignment with the Tea Party movement. As a member of the Republican Study Committee and the House Freedom Caucus, Roy’s support holds weight among conservative voters and could sway opinions in the 2024 presidential race.
In conclusion, Rep. Chip Roy’s endorsement of Gov. Ron DeSantis over Donald Trump showcases a shift in support among conservative lawmakers. Citing DeSantis’s conservative record, effective governance, and commitment to key Republican principles, Roy’s endorsement highlights the Texas representative’s confidence in DeSantis’s ability to lead and implement conservative policies. This endorsement may influence public opinion in the upcoming presidential race and demonstrate the growing relevance of DeSantis within the Republican Party.
