Arm, a British chipmaker, is building its own semiconductor to demonstrate the capabilities of its products, according to Financial Times reports.
The move comes as Arm aims to attract new customers and stimulate growth following its IPO, which is expected to occur later this year.
The company is partnering with manufacturing companies to develop the semiconductor, which will be led by a newly established “solutions engineering” team. The prototype chips will be designed for mobile devices, laptops, and other electronic devices.
According to industry executives cited by the Financial Times, Arm’s newest chip, which it has been working on for the past six months, is “more advanced” than any of its previous products.
Arm has no intention of selling or licensing the product but is instead working on a prototype of the chip.
Arm is a major supplier of intellectual property to many chip companies, particularly in mobile phones, and has partnerships with major chip contract manufacturers. Earlier this month, Intel announced that it will collaborate with Arm to guarantee that mobile phone chips and other products that use Arm’s technology can be made in Intel’s factories.
Arm has yet to respond to a request for comment by Reuters.
