Chris Christie criticizes Trump’s view of indictment as an ‘honorable badge’.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Reacts to Trump’s Indictment Claims
During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie responded to Donald Trump’s recent characterization of his indictments as badges of “honor and courage.”
Christie was shown a clip of Trump speaking at the Turning Point USA conference, where Trump claimed that being indicted by the “radical Left Democrats, Marxists, communists, and fascists” was a great honor and a courageous act. As a contender for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, Christie dismissed Trump’s statement with a scoff.
“He’s a liar and a coward. He’s not getting indicted for anyone other than because of his own conduct,” Christie said. “When he says he’s doing it for us, that’s a lie. And when he was doing all the things that he was doing with those documents, it shows exactly what a coward he is.”
A super PAC supporting Christie released a political ad criticizing Trump for not participating in a Republican primary debate. The ad suggested that if Trump were to attend a debate, he would have to face questions about his indictments, his loss to President Joe Biden, and his impeachments. Christie urged Trump to appear at the debate and “defend his record,” although he referred to that record as “not great” in an ABC interview.
Anchor Jake Tapper pointed out that Christie believes 2024 opponent Will Hurd will follow Trump’s precedent from 2016 by not committing to support the GOP nominee, regardless of who that person may be. Hurd’s decision not to pledge his support would disqualify him from participating in the primary debate. In contrast, eight years ago, when there were ten candidates on the debate stage, all except Trump agreed to support the eventual nominee.
“I will sign the debate pledge, and I will take it every bit as seriously as [Trump] did in 2016,” Christie affirmed.
Furthermore, Christie has met the fundraising threshold required to qualify for the primary debate.
Christie, Trump, and Hurd are competing against several other candidates, including former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, political commentator Larry Elder, and businessmen Vivek Ramaswamy and Perry Johnson, in the race for the GOP presidential nomination.
