Chris Christie dismisses No Labels third candidate movement as a ‘waste of time’.
GOP Candidate Chris Christie Rejects No Labels Third-Party Movement
GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie firmly stated that he has no intention of joining the No Labels third-party movement, dismissing it as a “fool’s errand.” In an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week, Christie emphasized his focus on winning the presidency and highlighted that only the Republican and Democratic nominees have a realistic chance of achieving that goal.
No Labels’ Ambition for the 2024 Election
No Labels has been actively advocating for a third-party candidate in multiple presidential elections. Specifically, for the 2024 election, the group aims to offer alternatives to former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, catering to voters who desire a departure from the 2020 election outcome.
The organization has launched a $70 million campaign to secure an independent ticket, causing concern among Democrats and their allies. Center-left groups’ polling indicates that a No Labels ticket could potentially act as a “spoiler,” resulting in a narrow victory for Trump. This has raised speculation about the potential third-party candidates, with attention primarily focused on Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.
Christie’s Stance on No Labels’ Approach
However, Christie expressed his disinterest in participating in what he referred to as a ”scattergun approach” to the election. He cautioned against the unpredictability of third-party campaigns, citing examples such as Ross Perot and Ralph Nader, where the impact on the election outcome was uncertain.
No Labels has denied allegations that their campaign would benefit Trump, asserting that their objective is to challenge the two-party system and potentially launch an alternative bid in the upcoming election. The group points to polling data indicating a significant number of undecided voters, approximately 21%, which they believe presents an unprecedented opportunity for a third-party candidate to succeed.
