Chris Christie supports Wray amidst GOP hearing he calls ‘theater’.
Chris Christie Defends FBI Director Christopher Wray Amid House Hearing
Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie passionately defended FBI Director Christopher Wray during a House hearing on the alleged weaponization of the bureau. Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, praised Wray as a “good guy” who possesses the ability to address and resolve numerous issues within the FBI. According to Christie, Wray has already made significant progress in fixing these problems.
Supporting the Men and Women of the FBI
“What you saw today, I think, was an animated and combative FBI director who’s defending the men and women who work for him every day and do a great job and protect us from domestic terrorism, from international terrorism, and from these drug cartels,”
Christie expressed to Fox News host John Roberts. He further stated, “I think Chris Wray has done a very good job. And I think, look, a lot of the stuff you see today is theater. But I believe Chris is a guy who can get it fixed.”
During the House Judiciary Committee hearing, Republican members grilled Wray on various issues, including the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and allegations of bias within the agency.
Concerns and Allegations
One accusation raised by the committee was that the bureau had “violated the First Amendment rights of Americans and potentially undermined our national security” by assisting censorship requests from a Ukrainian intelligence agency on behalf of social media companies. Other concerns focused on the FBI’s response to parents and the raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Despite these challenges, Christie remains steadfast in his support for Wray, emphasizing their long-standing friendship and professional history.
A Trusted Friend and Colleague
Christie and Wray have been friends for over two decades, having worked together in the Bush Justice Department and during Christie’s tenure as governor. In fact, Christie recommended Wray for the position of FBI director to President Trump.
“Look, I’ve known Chris for a long time,” Christie affirmed. “We worked together in the Bush Justice Department in the post 9/11 period, and he did an extraordinary job, and yeah, I did recommend him to President Trump, and I’m proud that I did.”
It is worth noting that Christie’s support for Wray diverges from other Republican hopefuls, such as Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida and former Vice President Mike Pence, who have expressed their intention to dismiss Wray if elected president next year.
