Chris Christie slams Trump family as grifters over donations for legal fees.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Calls Out Trump’s Diversion of Campaign Funds for Legal Fees
“Grifting is a Trump family tradition, and the latest scam is his campaign,”
– Chris Christie
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took to Twitter on Friday to criticize former President Donald Trump for allegedly using funds raised for his 2024 presidential campaign to cover legal fees for his upcoming criminal trials. Christie shared a report from the Washington Post, highlighting the issue.
A Self-Proclaimed Billionaire Swindling Campaign Donations
Christie expressed his concern over Trump’s actions, stating, “This self-proclaimed billionaire is swindling 50% of his campaign donations to pay for his personal legal fees. We don’t need a con-artist; we need a leader who can beat Biden.”
Christie, who recently entered the 2024 GOP presidential race, challenged Trump, the current Republican front-runner whom he had previously supported and advised.
Trump Faces Multiple Investigations
Trump is currently under investigation for three major issues: the election, the January 6th riot, and his handling of classified documents.
Trump’s Diversion of Campaign Funds
Christie’s comments come in response to reports that Trump has been diverting over half of the funds raised for his 2024 presidential campaign to a political action committee (PAC) in order to cover his personal legal fees. According to the Washington Post, Trump raised over $35 million between March and June, with $17.7 million going to his presidential campaign and the rest to his PAC, Save America. This PAC has previously been used to cover legal bills.
Trump recently adjusted the percentage of donations allocated to Save America, with 90% going to the presidential campaign and 10% to the PAC, as reported by the New York Times. A Trump spokesman, Steven Cheung, stated that the campaign aims to spend every donated dollar in the most cost-effective manner.
It has been revealed that millions of dollars from donors have already been used to cover legal fees through the Save America PAC, which is one of the top Republican fundraising organizations. Filings show that $16 million from the PAC has been allocated for legal-related payments in 2021 and 2022.
As the controversy surrounding Trump’s use of campaign funds continues, it raises questions about the integrity and transparency of his financial practices.
