Chris Coons dismisses impact of Hunter Biden investigation on Joe Biden’s reelection.
Sen. Chris Coons Defends President Biden’s Reelection Campaign
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) passionately defended President Joe Biden’s bid for reelection, assuring that the ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden will not impact the president’s leadership in the Oval Office.
“There’s no ties between President Biden and his conduct as president and these regrettable matters with Hunter Biden,” Coons emphasized during his appearance on ABC’s This Week on Sunday.
Coons expressed admiration for President Biden’s unwavering support for his son’s journey towards resolution and recovery. He firmly believes that this support does not implicate the president’s ability to lead and is confident that it will not affect his chances of reelection.
“Hunter Biden is not going to be on the election polls,” Coons clarified. “He is not standing for election next November. Donald Trump likely is, and the four different legal matters where Donald Trump has been charged with 83 counts stand in stark contrast.”
Coons highlighted the stark contrast between Hunter Biden, who is not running for office, and former President Donald Trump, who is facing multiple legal battles and numerous criminal counts.
Regarding the investigation led by David Weiss, Coons affirmed President Biden’s commitment to staying out of it, allowing the Department of Justice to conduct their five-year investigation independently.
“He is committed to staying out of this, to allowing the Department of Justice to conduct what has now been a five-year investigation and to move forward with this matter as they should,” Coons stated. “And I think that stands in sharp contrast to his predecessor who interfered in lots of matters at the Department of Justice.”
In recent developments, Hunter Biden has been charged with two misdemeanor tax offenses and a felony firearm offense. Despite a failed plea bargain, he pleaded not guilty to the tax crimes. The pressure on the Biden family increased when Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden in mid-August.
The special counsel has announced plans to indict Hunter Biden on a gun charge by the end of the month.
While concerns about Biden’s reelection viability have arisen due to a drop in his approval rating to 39%, according to a CNN poll, Coons remains confident in the president’s ability to overcome these challenges.
