Chris Coons jokes he’s ‘more of a Matt Damon guy’ in support for Biden against George Clooney
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) pushed back against actor George Clooney’s request for President Joe Biden to step aside from his 2024 reelection, joking that he is “more of a Matt Damon guy.”
The Biden campaign co-chair’s knock on Clooney comes after the megastar wrote an op-ed arguing that Biden had “saved democracy” in his presidency but that it is time to let another candidate take up the reins of the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination. Coons argued that while he does not see Biden every day, he himself has never seen the president show acts of mental decline, and that Biden is always “focused and clear” whenever the two share phone calls.
“Now there are some who have said publicly they’ve had some encounter or incident,” Coons said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “I think George Clooney may have said that. Now, I question whether George Clooney has really spent a lot of time with President Biden in person. I’m more of a Matt Damon guy than a George Clooney guy, but your question to me was ‘have you ever seen that?’ No, I have not.”
Coons has also vocalized his support for Biden on social media, writing on X that the United States has had almost four “great years” under Biden’s leadership compared to four “bad years” under former President Donald Trump’s watch. He also reiterated Biden’s comment about having a bad night at the presidential debate, and encouraged people not to “count Joe out.”
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has also been vocal in his support for Biden after the debate, telling organizers at a campaign office in Philadelphia that the president is the only person in the state who has “kicked Trump’s a** in an election.” The senator has also rebutted op-eds online asking Biden to bow out, writing “f*** that” to a piece suggesting Biden leave the 2024 race.

Clooney’s op-ed was published as many other celebrities were already suggesting Biden drop out, while others have greatly criticized the actor for making such a suggestion. ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, who conducted Biden’s first one-on-one interview after the debate, has also expressed doubt that Biden can serve another four years in the White House.
The division over whether to keep Biden in the race comes ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to become the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. Should Biden remain in the race and become the Democratic Party’s nominee in August, the stage would be set for a rematch between the two candidates.
