Chris Sununu feuds with The View over Harris replacing Biden

Gov. Chris Sununu‘s (R-NH) appearance on ABC’s The View got testy when discussing Vice President Kamala Harris, as the governor argued the Democratic Party was sidestepping the voice of the voters.

President Joe Biden ended his 2024 reelection bid in July, and Harris has become the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Co-host Sara Haines asked Sununu why the Republican Party could not replace former President Donald Trump with a different candidate like Democrats did with Biden, prompting Sununu to argue Democratic voters wanted Biden but “a couple elites” wanted someone else.

“Guys, look, three phone calls were made from Schumer and Pelosi, Biden said I’m in this thing, I’m not leaving, a couple phone calls are made, and all of a sudden he’s pushed out, and in 48 hours all of the delegates aren’t given a choice of other candidates,” Sununu said on Thursday’s show. “They’re told, ‘You’re going to get behind Kamala.’”

The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg contended that other candidates chose not to challenge Harris for the nomination.

Sununu then shared a hypothetical scenario in which the Republican Party informed Trump he was losing to Biden in polling and, as a result, would be replaced by former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley as the party’s presidential nominee. Sununu supported Haley in the Republican primary but contended that such a scenario would be “awful” because it would rob voters of choice.

Sunny Hostin, one of the talk show’s co-hosts, argued that the Democratic voters voted for Harris as vice president, and the delegates now want her as the nominee. Co-host Joy Behar joined in and argued the “ship has sailed” to select Biden’s replacement and that Harris is the nominee.

Sununu also condemned Trump’s recent comments against Harris at the National Association of Black Journalists convention, arguing that they did not help his case in winning support from voters. He reiterated similar advice from other Republicans that Trump should stick to criticizing Harris’s policies.

Harris has received a boost in support and fundraising since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee. Sununu, however, has predicted that this boost is merely a “honeymoon” period, which he argued will only last about 30 days.
