Chris Sununu promises to do everything possible to reduce the number of candidates in the GOP primary.
GOP Governor Vows to Narrow Field and Stop Trump in 2024 Election
Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire is determined to prevent former President Donald Trump from jeopardizing the Republican Party’s chances in the 2024 election. In an op-ed for the New York Times, Sununu pledged to do “everything” in his power to help narrow the GOP primary field and endorse the most viable alternative to Trump.
“As governor of the first-in-the-nation primary state, I will do everything I can to help narrow the field. I plan to endorse and campaign for the best alternative to Mr. Trump. As of now, it’s anyone’s for the taking,” Sununu wrote.
Sununu urged Republican candidates to be more aggressive in challenging Trump and to present their own cases to the voters. However, he also emphasized that if these candidates fail to gain momentum, they should step aside to make room for a stronger alternative to Trump.
“To win, they must break free of Mr. Trump’s drama, step out of his shadow, go on offense, attack, and present their case. Then they need to see if they can catch fire this fall — and if they can’t, they need to step aside, because winnowing down the field of candidates is the single best chance to stop Mr. Trump. Too much is at stake for us to have wishful candidacies,” Sununu said.
Sununu warned that nominating Trump for a third consecutive time would result in a challenging general election. He cited a poll showing that 63% of adults would not support Trump in 2024.
“Every candidate with an (R) next to their name, from school board to the statehouse, will be left to answer for the electoral albatross at the top of the ticket,” Sununu wrote.
Sununu also highlighted the importance of engaging with voters in person, particularly in early primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire. He noted that Trump’s poll numbers in these states are relatively low, creating an opportunity for an alternative candidate.
“In Iowa and New Hampshire, the first two states that will vote in the 2024 Republican primaries, Mr. Trump is struggling. In both Iowa and New Hampshire, he is consistently polling in the low 40 percent range. The floor of his support may be high, but his ceiling is low,” he wrote.
Despite his criticism of Trump, Sununu stated that he does not believe the former president will secure the 2024 Republican nomination. However, he has pledged to support Trump if he does become the nominee. Sununu has been actively campaigning alongside other GOP candidates, including Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, in New Hampshire.
Governor Sununu, who has served four terms in New Hampshire, recently announced that he will not seek a fifth term after winning a landslide victory in the 2022 election.
