Chris Wray Responds To Accusations Of FBI’s Political Bias: ‘FBI Is On The American People’s Side’

FBI Director Christopher Wray During a Fox News interview Tuesday night on Fox News, the bureau was defended against allegations of bias by claiming it is impartial. “independent” And on “the American people’s side.”

“I hear these claims of politicization, but I can tell you that the FBI is and is going to stay independent,” Wray stated. “And that means following the facts wherever they lead, no matter who likes it. And I add that last part because what I have found in today’s world is that far too many people use as their standard for whether they think something was fair or objective, whether it’s an FBI investigation, whether it’s a Supreme Court decision, or even an election, is whether they liked the result, whether their side won or lost.”

“But that’s not how independence and objectivity work. We are not on either side,” Wray continued. “The FBI is on the American people’s side, on the Constitution’s side.”

Bret Baier, Fox News anchor brought up examples of public distrust for the FBI.

“Mark Houck, Pennsylvania pro-life activist arrested at his home in front of his family for an alleged violation of the Freedom of Access of Clinics Act, alleged incident in which he was protesting in front of an abortion clinic. He was recently acquitted of all charges at trial,” Baier said. “The show of force for that arrest, that decision to use that force, was that by the book?”

Wray replied, “Those decisions are made, as they should be, by the commanders on the ground in the field office who have the expertise about when to conduct operations safely and securely for the safety of everybody involved.”

“I mean, historically, FBI protocol is that a defendant has — if he has no criminal history, is not believed to be violent or pose a threat to public safety, that he or she is permitted to self-surrender, rather than subject dynamic execution of an arrest warrant,” Baier countered. “Here’s what I’m talking about as the dual system. There’s that for a pro-life activist, but not that for a Black Lives Matter protester who maybe torches a federal building over the summer. So, that disparity, that dichotomy is what sticks in people’s mind.”

Wray said that “people have their opinions” And claimed that the FBI had “one standard” This is it “irrespective of ideology, of politics, in this country, it doesn’t matter what you’re upset about or who you’re upset with.”

TRANSCRIPT:

BRET BAIER FOX ANCHOR: Alright, let’s start by talking about the book.

Mark Houck, a Pennsylvania pro-life activist, was arrested at his Pennsylvania home in front of his relatives for an alleged violation of Freedom of Access of Clinics Act. This alleged incident involved Houck protesting in front of an abortifacism clinic. Recently, he was acquitted all charges.

Was the law affixed to the use of force in this arrest?

CHRISTOPHER WAY, FBI DIRECTOR. These decisions are made by the commanders in the field office, who have the experience and expertise to decide when operations should be conducted safely and securely for everyone involved.

These processes were, to my knowledge all followed in this instance.

BAIER: Yes, I mean, historically, FBI protocol is that a defendant has — if he has no criminal history, is not believed to be violent or pose a threat to public safety, that he or she is permitted to self-surrender, rather than subject dynamic execution of an arrest warrant.

This is the dual system. It’s the same for a prolife activist, but it is not for a Black Lives Matter demonstrator who might be torching a federal building this summer. That is the difference, that dichotomy, is what sticks in peoples’ minds.

WRAY

I can only tell you that there is one standard. It doesn’t matter who you are upset with or what ideology you have. It’s not possible to express your anger with violence. So we remain neutral on ideology and refocus our attention on violence.

There have been cases where white-collar white-collar arrests resulted in police shootings. There are many factors that go into making the decision about how to safely and securely conduct arrests.

The FBI has a long track record of conducting these operations with a much better track record.
