Clemson University Bans TikTok on School Network

Clemson University has recently taken a bold step by banning the use of TikTok on any device connected to the school’s network. This decision aims to protect the university’s resources and information while ensuring the privacy of various devices.

The Chinese-owned social media app, TikTok, is now inaccessible on Clemson’s eduroam and wired Wi-Fi network. However, students and staff can still access the platform through their personal data plans.

This policy change was communicated to students via email on July 7, following Governor Henry McMaster’s ban on TikTok for government-managed devices due to security concerns.

Governor McMaster emphasized the warnings from federal law enforcement and national security officials about the potential dangers posed by TikTok. In response, a growing bipartisan coalition in Congress is advocating for a nationwide ban on TikTok access in the United States.

It’s worth noting that at least 34 states, including South Carolina, have implemented similar bans on TikTok.

Protecting Institutional Resources and Privacy

“This step allows the University to protect institutional resources and information while safeguarding the privacy of a wide variety of devices connected to the Clemson network,” the South Carolina school said in a statement.

By prohibiting TikTok on their network, Clemson University is taking proactive measures to ensure the security and privacy of their students and staff.

Implications for Students and Staff

As a result of this ban, students and staff can no longer access TikTok through Clemson’s network. However, they can still enjoy the app by using their personal data plans.

This decision reflects the growing concerns surrounding TikTok’s potential risks and the need to prioritize the safety of the Clemson community.
