Clyburn blames Harris campaign for ‘tremendous’ candidate’s 2024 election loss

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) blamed former Vice President Kamala Harris‘s campaign team for her 2024 election loss, maintaining that she was “a great candidate” and “tremendous talent.”

Clyburn’s praise of Harris came in response to CNN anchor Kate Bolduan asking what he thought about Harris considering a run for California’s governor. Early polling suggests she would be the leading candidate if she chose to run.

“I will say this. I think that she is a tremendous talent. I think she ran a great campaign. I think she was ill-served in that campaign by people who should have listened to some of us who saw and felt things,” Clyburn said. “Listen to Bill Clinton when he told them what was going on. Listen to yours truly, when I was going around these rural communities, I knew what we needed to do and was not doing it.”

Clyburn said he wasn’t going to give any advice to Harris on her next political move.

“She was a great candidate, and I think she will make a great candidate in the future, whatever she decides to run for, ” Clyburn said. “But I‘m not going to give any advice as to whether or not she should or should not.”

Clyburn was among the few people President Joe Biden confided in about his plans to withdraw from the presidential race. Clyburn urged Biden to include an endorsement of Harris in his statement. The Democratic representative was quick to back Harris.

“We should do everything we can to bolster her, whether it’s in second place or the top of the ticket,” Clyburn told MSNBC.

Clyburn is credited with boosting Biden during the 2020 presidential race, having endorsed the former president just three days before the South Carolina primary. Biden carried the state with 48.4% of the vote, marking a pivotal moment in the race.

Prior to Clyburn’s endorsement, Biden lost primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.
