CNN Suffers Worst Ratings Week in Nine Years Due to Unwatchable Programming
It’s not news, necessarily, that CNN is not keeping up with the post-Trump administration times we live in — despite a change in course directed by new boss Chris Licht following a merger between CNN’s parent company and Discovery. There will be discussion about whether or not the network can be saved, as its ratings continue to plummet to levels that haven’t been seen in almost a decade.
A new dispatch of TheWrap highlighting CNN is available “notched its lowest ratings in nine years across all its day parts for the week of Jan. 16 through Jan. 22, 2023,” Nielsen Ratings Data: “just 444,000 viewers in primetime, 93,000 in the all-important age 25-54 news demographic and 417,000 in viewers and 80,000 in the demo for total day.”
TheWrap stated that the last week was “the first time since May 2014” CNN was able to maintain a viewership of less than 450,000. This isn’t a sign that there was an industry-wide drop last week. Fox News Channel was the cable news leader for nearly too many consecutive weeks. It had 1.4 million viewers total and 176,000 viewers in the 25-54 age range during that time period. The primetime shows attracted two million viewers, while 256,000 were in the 25-54 demographic.
These are 5-alarm fires #s – omg: “CNN just notched its lowest ratings in 9 years across all its day parts…averaging just 444,000 viewers in PRIMETIME, 93,000 in the all-important age 25-54 news demo & [in day] 417,000 in viewers and 80,000 in the demo.” https://t.co/mjtW26VrXS

TheWrap reported on the ratings woes for the fresh, not caring to hold back when evaluating Licht’s programming success. “CNN This Morning” With hosts he hand-picked for competition with Morning Joe on MSNBC and Fox and Friends
Some especially troublesome news out of this week’s Nielsen numbers is that Licht’s primary programming move, “CNN This Morning,” Also, it suffered its lowest week since its inception just three months ago. It attracted just 331,000 viewers per week. “Fox & Friends” Nearly 1,000,000 people were represented “Morning Joe” 760,000 people were attracted to the show.
Licht hand-picked CNN’s Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins to host the rebooted morning show. However, the trio has not been able to grow their audience. A source familiar with the situation revealed to TheWrap that Eric Hall, EP, was being reassigned. “CNN Tonight,” Laura Coates hosts the show. This signals that Licht is conscious of how important it is to succeed.
TheWrap also heard from insiders, that Collins was even a host for Lemon, Harlow, or Harlow. “seem to be growing frustrated” Over the direction.
“The show can’t decide strategically what exactly it is, so it’s trying to be everything which can create whiplash for a viewer when segments seem off-brand in tonality,” One insider said. “The audience for morning news on network TV is different than the cable news audience and since we’re not gaining new viewers we definitely need to retain our legacy ones”
TheWrap has reported that CNN will soon launch a revamped daytime slate with anchor trios. The goal is to make CNN’s news more interesting. “fresh approach” Its daytime programming has two new programs.
This is the effort to achieve that. “fresh approach” CNN’s mornings apparently have not gone as planned. This can be seen in the ratings slump and TheWrap notes CNN “insiders” They “fear that things are unlikely to get better” Licht’s efforts to refresh the network’s lineup “are likely to make matters worse.”
