Coast Guard hunts for missing boat, finds note at suspect’s house.
Search for Suspected Gunman Intensifies in Maine
From the depths of the Kennebec River to the homes connected to the alleged shooter, the hunt for Robert Card continues.
Card, a 40-year-old man, has been on the run since Wednesday evening when gunfire erupted at two locations in Lewiston, Maine. The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of 18 people and left 13 others injured.
During a search of Card’s residence, law enforcement officials discovered a note, as reported by NBC News. Although the contents of the note have not been disclosed, investigators are working tirelessly to decipher its meaning and utilize it in their search for Card.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard is scouring the Kennebec River for Card’s missing 15-foot boat. According to The Messenger, Card’s vehicle was found near a dock in a nearby community.
Despite hours of searching, Chief Petty Officer Ryan Smith stated that nothing unusual has been found so far, as reported by The Washington Post.
Thursday evening saw FBI agents and other law enforcement officers surrounding a residence in Bowdoin, where several of Card’s relatives reside. As a helicopter circled overhead, the officers demanded entry into the home.
As the search continues, survivors are sharing their harrowing escape stories.
One survivor, identified only as Brandon, recounted how he narrowly avoided being shot by sprinting down a bowling lane and taking cover in the pin-setting equipment.
“Out of nowhere, he just came in and there was a loud pop. I thought it was a balloon and I had my back turned to the door,” Brandon told a reporter. “As soon as I turned and saw that it was not a balloon, he was holding a weapon, I just booked it down the lane and I slid basically into where the pins are and climbed up into the machine and was on top of the machines for about 10 minutes.”
Card, a long-time member of the Army Reserve, had previously been sent for in-patient psychiatric treatment this summer after making threats at his base, according to NBC. His sister-in-law also revealed that he had been experiencing auditory hallucinations, including during the bowling alley and restaurant incidents on Wednesday.
