College Mandates Student Athletes View Video Stating All Whites Carry Racism
Davidson College’s Required Video Sparks Heated Debate Among Alumni
Controversy has struck Davidson College in North Carolina, as student athletes were recently obligated to engage with provocative content that broad-brushed all white individuals as inherently racist, while stating that people of color couldn’t harbor racist sentiments. This instructional approach has shaken the college community, inciting alumni to demand a more balanced conversation around these sensitive topics.
The Video at the Center of Controversy
The film in question, “I’m Not Racist… Am I?”, was shown outside of regular school hours, raising concerns about the content and its timing. It included a segment where an Asian student posited that racism can emanate from minorities toward white people as well. This was countered by a facilitator who labeled such behavior as “bigotry” instead of racism and claimed that only white individuals can exert racism due to systemic power imbalances.
“So, are you saying that all white people are racist?”
“Yes.”
“We would also say that it’s only white people that could be racist, that are racist.”

The dialogues in the film left students mostly nonreactive, yet it’s evident that the message was designed to be thought-provoking, if not confrontational.
Alumni Push Back
The Davidsonians for Freedom of Thought and Discourse (DFTD), a collective of college alumni championing free speech, spoke to impacted students who expressed offense at the film’s divisive nature. While open to discussions of racism among peers, they believe that such conversations should not be dominated by extreme viewpoints without room for critical evaluation or alternative perspectives. DFTD initiated a petition to advocate for academic freedom and halt the integration of controversial ‘anti-oppression’ concepts into academic syllabi where they seem irrelevant.
The petition echoes the ethos handed down by the American Association of University Professors, underscoring the importance of maintaining academic content within the realms of relevant subject matter and avoiding compulsory political or ideological alignments.
The College’s Position
In response to the uproar, Davidson College conveyed to The College Fix that the video served to present various perspectives to the students. They emphasize that college is an arena for encountering nuanced ideas, suggesting that assignments don’t equate to endorsements of every concept presented. Instead, the experience should foster intellectual exploration, critical debate, and the accumulation of broader knowledge and understanding.
In the throes of these discussions, what remains paramount is the integrity of the educational environment, where ideas can intermingle freely — challenging, yet never alienating, each and every student on their quest for insightful enlightenment and mutual respect.
