Colorado Governor Signs Four New Gun Control Bills into Law

The once-conservative state of Colorado continues to march further Left as Democrat Governor Jared Polis signed four new gun control bills into law this week.

Expansion of Red Flag Laws

One of the new laws includes an expansion of the state’s red flag laws. Previously, only family members or law enforcement could petition the court to temporarily seize someone’s firearms. With the new law, healthcare providers, district attorneys, and teachers can also petition the court to take someone’s firearms away.

Increased Age to Purchase Firearms

Another new law increases the age to purchase a firearm in the state to 21. This law is aimed at reducing gun violence among young adults.

Three-Day Waiting Period

There is now a three-day waiting period after a firearm is purchased before it can be taken home. This law is intended to give law enforcement more time to conduct background checks and prevent impulsive acts of violence.

Easier to Sue the Gun Industry

The gun industry can now be sued more easily under the new laws. This is a significant change that could have far-reaching consequences for gun manufacturers and sellers.

Gun rights groups have already filed lawsuits to reverse the increase in buying age and the three-day waiting period. A fifth piece of legislation that would ban the creation and sale of so-called “ghost guns” is expected to pass soon.

Despite pushback from Republicans across the state, Governor Polis remains committed to reducing gun violence in Colorado. The new laws are likely to face legal challenges in the near future.
