A dentist from Colorado, James Craig, is facing allegations of poisoning his wife by lacing her protein shakes with arsenic and cyanide, leading to her death. It was reported that he did this so that he could be with another woman with whom he was having an affair.
The authorities have stated that the alleged incident was a “heinous, complex, and calculated murder.”
The 45-year-old was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and detained after his wife’s third and final visit to the hospital. She suffered a severe seizure there, was put on a ventilator, declared medically brain dead, and then taken off life support.
Craig’s business partner informed the police of Craig’s delivery of potassium cyanide to their medical practice, stating that there was no need to have the chemical in the office, which prompted the investigation of Angela Craig’s death.
Authorities claim that Craig “showed the planning and intent to end his wife’s life by searching for ways to kill someone undetected, providing her poisons that align with her hospitalized symptoms, and working on starting a new life” with his mistress.
An arrest warrant affidavit found that the dentist conducted several suspicious internet searches before his wife’s death. These included “undetectable poisons,” “how to make poison,” “how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human,” and YouTube searches for “top 5 undetectable poisons that show no signs of foul play.”
Evidence shows that Craig ordered arsenic over the internet, using a fake email account, and it was delivered on the day of the alleged poisoning incident at his dental office. Craig had also ordered Oleandrin, a poisonous plant extract. However, it was later found out that the delivery was “intercepted by FedEx,” at the request of the investigators.
In March, Angela had told her husband through texts that she felt drugged. According to the affidavit, Craig replied, “Given our history, I know that must be triggering. Just, for the record, I didn’t drug you. I am super worried though. You really looked pale before I left. Like in your lips even.”
Angela’s sister has alleged that Craig had drugged Angela in the past because he wanted to commit suicide and did not want his wife to be able to stop him, revealing issues in the couple’s marriage. She added that after her sister’s death, Craig told her that he did not want an autopsy to take place.
Colorado Judicial Branch Court Executive Shaun Clark confirmed that charges are expected to be filed against the dentist on Thursday. Craig is being held without bond and has been prohibited from contacting his six children.
