Colorado student suspended for Gadsden flag patch speaks out, dares other kids to take a stand.
A 12-Year-Old’s Fight for Freedom: Colorado Student Suspended for Gadsden Flag Patch
A 12-year-old student at The Vanguard School in Colorado Springs recently made headlines after being suspended for wearing a Gadsden flag patch on his backpack. Jaiden Rodriguez, a seventh-grader, believes that students must stand up for their rights or risk losing them altogether.
The school initially suspended Rodriguez for one day, claiming that the flag’s connection to slavery violated their rules. However, after Rodriguez and his mother explained the flag’s historical significance, the school relented and allowed him back in the classroom.
The Gadsden flag, featuring a coiled snake and the words “Don’t Tread on Me,” was first used during the Revolutionary War in 1775. It was designed by Ben Franklin in 1754. Despite its historical context, the school argued that it represented slavery.
Rodriguez, during an appearance on Charlie Kirk’s show, revealed that he educated his teacher about the flag’s history. He also clarified that the slogan on his backpack, “Sic Semper Tyrannis,” meaning “death always to tyrants,” was not connected to violence but was a slogan used in 1776.

The video of Rodriguez’s interaction with school officials went viral, which he believes played a significant role in his favor. Without the public attention, he believes he may have faced expulsion instead of just a suspension.

Despite potential consequences, Rodriguez’s purpose was clear: to stand up for all the students at his school. He proudly declared that he would continue wearing the “Don’t Tread on Me” patch on his backpack.

When asked about his message to other students facing similar dilemmas, Rodriguez posed a thought-provoking question: “Would you rather have friends and live under a tyrannical system or stand up for yourself and your rights but maybe lose a few friends?” He acknowledged that taking a stand might result in losing friends, but emphasized the importance of defending one’s rights.

During a recorded meeting with a school administrator, Jaiden’s mother, Eden Rodriguez, learned that the school objected to the flag due to its alleged connection to slavery. The administrator stated that displaying the flag violated their policy.
