Comer urges Biden to clarify $200K loan receipt.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Calls on President Biden to Account for $200,000 Check
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has called on President Joe Biden to explain a $200,000 check he received from his brother, James Biden, in March of 2018.
The memo line on the check described it as a “loan repayment” from James Biden to his brother. In a letter to White House Counsel Edward Siskel, Comer demanded evidence of the underlying loan that James Biden was supposedly repaying.
“If Joe Biden did personally loan James Biden an amount that was later repaid by the $200,000 check, please provide the loan documents, including the loan payment, loan agreement, and any other supporting loan documentation,” wrote Comer in his letter to the Biden White House.

This $200,000 check has come under scrutiny amid ongoing Republican investigations into President Biden’s involvement in his family’s business dealings. Republicans have accused Biden of engaging in influence-peddling throughout his political career, using his position to benefit his family’s business deals.
One such deal involved James Biden and a bankrupt rural hospital operator called Americore. House Republicans claim that witnesses to the deal stated James Biden promised investors access to a future Biden administration and “the highest levels of government.” This allegedly occurred before Joe Biden announced his presidential run in 2020.
According to bank records reviewed by Comer, Americore paid James Biden about $600,000 in 2018. On the same day, James Biden wrote a “loan repayment” check for $200,000 to his brother, the sitting U.S. president.
White House Spokesperson Mocks Comer, Insists Check is Self-Explanatory
White House spokesperson Ian Sams dismissed Comer’s questions about the check, claiming that it was a loan repayment and mocking Comer’s inquiry.
“Jamie Comer is pretty desperate to try to distract from Republicans’ speaker mess. It’s a loan repayment from when President Biden loaned his brother money. When he was out of office in 2018, no less. It’s right there on the check!” wrote Sams in a social media post.
Despite Sams’s insistence, Comer stated that the House Oversight Committee has found no evidence of a significant personal loan from the president to his brother in the Biden family’s bank records.
“Whether it was a loan or not, James Biden’s check to Joe Biden demonstrates how he personally benefited from his family’s influence peddling and access to the Biden name,” wrote Comer. “We are troubled that Joe Biden’s ability to recoup funds depended on his brother cashing in on the Biden brand.”
Comer has called on the Biden White House to provide all relevant documentation and IRS filings related to the alleged loan.
Loan Might Not Be Legal: Comer
Comer also raised concerns about the legality of the loan arrangement, stating that it could potentially violate the Internal Revenue Code’s requirements for reporting below-market loans.
“Indeed, there appears to have been no interest paid on the ‘loan’ based upon the White House’s own representations. The current lack of documentation leaves reason to doubt claims that this transaction was repayment for a legal loan,” wrote Comer.
Comer urged the Biden White House to provide all applicable documentation and IRS filings to address these concerns.
