Congress Investigates IRS Whistleblower’s ‘Troubling Claims’ About Agency
IRS Whistleblower Claims Possible Political Interference in Hunter Biden Probe
The U.S. House Ways and Means Committee is investigating claims from an alleged Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblower who is voicing concerns about possible political interference in the probe targeting Hunter Biden. The whistleblower, a career IRS criminal supervisory special agent, has been overseeing the ongoing and sensitive investigation of a high-profile, controversial subject since early 2020.
Protecting the Whistleblower
Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) has indicated that the panel is conducting a review of the matter and expects full cooperation from the IRS, particularly with regard to ensuring the whistleblower is protected from retaliation. IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel has committed to protecting the whistleblower and fiercely defending the integrity of the whistleblower process.
Nonpartisan Information
The whistleblower’s attorney, Mark Lytle, has addressed members of the House of Representatives and Senate, saying his client wants to offer a nonpartisan group of relevant committees information necessary to exercise their constitutional oversight function. The attorney did not mention Hunter Biden, but Republicans say the anonymous IRS worker is bringing information about a potential conflict of interest with the Hunter Biden investigation.
Probe into Hunter Biden
The younger Biden confirmed he was under investigation for tax fraud after the conclusion of the 2020 election. Few details have been revealed about the probe since then. Republicans claim that Hunter Biden has been engaged in corrupt overseas business practices to enrich his family.
