On September 22, the senator and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, were charged with corruption-related offenses alongside three New Jersey businessmen.
The charges include conspiracy to commit bribery and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud.
According to charging documents, Mr. Menendez and his wife allegedly accepted “hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes” in the form of cash, gold, and mortgage payments from the businessmen. In June 2022, during a house search, the FBI discovered and seized around $500,000 in cash and over $100,000 in gold at the Menendez residence, believed to be part of the bribery payments.
In addition to the bribery charges, Mr. Menendez and his wife were also charged with extortion for allegedly attempting to influence prosecutors in specific criminal cases.
Prosecutors have filed a forfeiture claim to retain the money and gifts received by Mr. Menendez as bribes.
