Shark attack in Turks and Caicos results in Connecticut woman losing limb.
22-Year-Old American Citizen Attacked by Shark in Turks and Caicos
It’s a nightmare come true for any beachgoer – a 22-year-old American citizen was attacked by a shark while snorkeling off the coast of the Turks and Caicos islands. The woman, who has not been identified, was swimming with a friend when the shark bit off her leg. She was rushed to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in serious condition.
“Our understanding is that she was the guest of another resort and the client of a boat excursion company, neither of which we are affiliated with nor located near,” said Stephanie Mack, spokesperson for the Blue Haven Resort where the incident occurred.
The attack happened on Wednesday around 3 p.m. outside the Blue Haven Resort on the island of Providenciales. An employee of a nearby resort called the police and requested an ambulance. The incident is not related to the Blue Haven Resort, according to Mack.
While the U.S. leads all countries for the most unprovoked shark bites, the total number of shark attacks around the world is extremely low when compared to how many people swim in the ocean each year.
