Police Chief’s Son Sought After Shooting
Manhunt Continues for Nashville Police Chief’s Son Suspected of Shooting 2 Tennessee Officers
Police in Tennessee are on a desperate search for the estranged son of Nashville’s police chief, who is the prime suspect in the shooting of two police officers in a neighboring city.
The incident occurred in La Vergne, a city located about 20 miles southeast of Nashville. Officers were investigating a stolen vehicle outside a Dollar General store on Saturday afternoon when they encountered the man. A struggle ensued, and the man pulled out a handgun, shooting the officers, according to La Vergne Police Chief Christopher Moews.
The suspect has been identified as John C. Drake Jr., 38, the son of Metro Nashville Police Department Chief John Drake.

One officer was shot twice, in the groin and right forearm, while the other officer was hit in the rear left shoulder. Both were rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
The injured officers’ identities have not been released, but one of them was released from the hospital on Saturday night. The other officer remains in stable condition and is being kept overnight for observation, according to Anne Smith, a spokeswoman for the city of La Vergne.
In a statement, Chief John Drake confirmed that his son was the suspect in the shooting. He revealed that he and his son had been estranged for many years with minimal contact. The younger Drake, a convicted felon, has a history of criminal activity, the police chief said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has issued a statewide alert for Drake, who is wanted on two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the search.
Following the shooting, La Vergne police initially issued a shelter-in-place order for residents, which was later lifted as the search for Drake continued.
Mayor Freddie O’Connell expressed his support for Chief Drake and extended his sympathies to the wounded officers and their families.
“My heart goes out to Chief Drake, his family, and the two wounded La Vergne police officers. I understand that we cannot be held responsible for the actions of our family members, and I stand by Chief Drake during this difficult time,” Mayor O’Connell said.
