Cori Bush faces ethics complaint over alleged misuse of government resources for campaigning.
Rep. Cori Bush Faces Ethics Complaint for Allegedly Misusing Government Resources
Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) is under scrutiny as a watchdog group, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, has filed an ethics complaint against her. The complaint alleges that Bush utilized government resources for campaign fundraising purposes.
The complaint was sent to the House Office of Congressional Ethics after Bush shared a video clip of a House proceeding in a tweet that included a fundraising link. This action prompted the watchdog group to question the appropriateness of her behavior.
“Rep. Bush disrupted official House proceedings with outrageous and unprofessional behavior and then campaigned and fundraised off of it. Moreover, to do so she used official House government resources, namely video footage of official House floor proceedings,” the complaint stated.
In July, Bush interrupted Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) during remarks on the House floor, accusing his bills of being racist. She later quote-tweeted a video of the incident, expressing further grievances with the GOP’s bills.
“I didn’t get to finish. Their bills are also sexist, patriarchal, xenophobic, classist, homophobic, and transphobic,” Bush asserted.
What drew additional attention was that Bush included a fundraising link to her House campaign in her reply to the tweet.
The violation, according to the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, stems from House members not being allowed to use House proceedings for campaign or political purposes.
“The legal violation in this case is obvious and there are no facts that can excuse it—Bush used official House proceedings and resources for political purposes. Video of official house floor proceedings is an official resource, and both using it for political purposes and posting it on a campaign social media account are violations of the ethics rules,” the complaint explained.
The complaint further emphasized that it is irrelevant whether Bush obtained the video from CSPAN or any other entity because members are prohibited from using official footage for political purposes. The fact that Bush shared the video on her campaign social media account and directly fundraised from it demonstrates a disregard for the law, according to the complaint.
This is not the first time Bush has faced ethics complaints. She has previously been accused of violating federal law by using campaign funds to pay her husband.
