Cori Bush trails challenger a week ahead of House primary: Poll

A month after Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) became the first “Squad” member to lose his House primary, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) is in danger of also losing her seat, according to a new poll.

A poll released on Monday of likely Democratic primary voters, conducted by the Mellman Group on behalf of the Democratic Majority For Israel PAC, shows St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell leading Bush 48%-42% in the Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District.

Bell’s lead over Bush continues a trend of polls in recent months which has shown the Squad Democrat and former Black Lives Matter organizer trailing behind her challenger.

The survey conducted by the Mellman Group from July 21-24 was an improvement for Bell compared to the group’s last poll, conducted in June, which only showed him leading Bush 43%-42%. The July poll was conducted with 400 voters in the district and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9%.

Much of the uproar regarding Bush, which has allowed a primary challenger to be competitive in the polls, stems from her views on the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. She has been one of the chief critics of Israel in Congress, going as far as calling the Jewish State’s war against Hamas an “ethnic cleansing” in October, and declined to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress last week.

Opposition to Israel has been a key issue, among others, in motivating primary challengers to many Squad Democrats. Westchester County Executive George Latimer had contrasting views on Israel when he challenged Bowman, but mainly focused his campaign on going after the congressman’s antics on Capitol Hill, such as when Bowman got into a screaming match with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

After Bowman and Bush, the other most vulnerable Squad Democrat is Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who nearly lost her primary to a challenger in 2022.

The Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District is scheduled for Aug. 6.
