Cornyn Attacks House GOP For Investigating Political Prosecution Of Trump By Soros-Funded DA
Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, questioned the rationale behind the House Republicans’ latest move to investigate the never-ending “witch hunt” by the Democrats against former President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
The previous Saturday, the Republican House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, instructed GOP-led committees to probe Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s “outrageous abuse of power” in “pursuing political vengeance against President Trump.” Bragg has campaigned on a platform to prosecute Trump using funds provided by leftist financier George Soros.
“I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions,” McCarthy said.
Cornyn, however, expressed confusion at McCarthy’s announcement, saying to Politico: “There’s more than enough to do. I would hope they would stick to the agenda they ran on when they got elected to the majority.”
Bragg’s office is reportedly close to bringing an indictment of Trump that would result in the first arrest of a former president in American history. The Manhattan prosecutor alleges that Trump mischaracterized payments to Stormy Daniels, a porn performer.
The case was revived after Democrats failed to secure Trump’s criminal conviction, which was then the top item on their policy agenda. When Bragg was a U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York and Trump was still in the White House, Bragg’s team looked into the case and decided it was too weak to pursue.
Cornyn also compared the ongoing war in Eastern Europe to World War II during his response to criticism of the United States’ involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “Stop risking our security and wasting our money on stupid wars that have nothing to do with us,” wrote Federalist CEO Sean Davis.
Last summer, Cornyn was jeered at his home state’s GOP convention after surrendering Americans’ rights to Democrats on gun control.
