The Official Cause of Death for Paul Reubens, the Iconic Actor Who Played “Pee-wee Herman,” Has Been Released
The news of Paul Reubens’ passing in July shocked fans of the beloved actor, known for his iconic role as “Pee-wee Herman.” The official cause of death has now been revealed, shedding light on Reubens’ battle with cancer.
According to The Blast, Reubens was diagnosed with two types of cancer at the time of his death. The main one was “acute myelogenous leukemia,” a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and leads to the production of abnormal blood cells. Additionally, Reubens was also suffering from metastatic lung cancer.
The late actor’s representatives announced his death on July 31, stating, “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

The news of Reubens’ battle with cancer came as a surprise to fans, as he had not previously disclosed his illness. In a message released by his representatives, Reubens apologized for not going public with his health struggles earlier and expressed his love and gratitude for his friends, fans, and supporters.
In honor of Reubens’ parents, he requested that any expressions of sympathy be made to organizations such as Stand Up to Cancer or institutes researching dementia and Alzheimer’s.
According to his death certificate, Reubens was cremated and buried at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. This iconic cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the final resting place for many notable figures from the entertainment industry.
Paul Reubens rose to fame with his role in the 1985 movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and further solidified his status as a household name with the TV show ”Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” which aired from 1986 to 1991 and received numerous Emmy Awards.
