Tragedy struck during a heroic act as the fire chief of a small Texas community lost his life while responding to a house fire amidst the raging wildfires in the Texas Panhandle.
The Hutchinson County Office of Emergency Management confirmed that Fritch Fire Chief Zeb Smith bravely entered the burning home to search for potential victims but tragically did not make it out alive.
Smith swiftly arrived at the scene of the fire in the town of approximately 1,800 residents.
During a press conference, Brandon Strope, a spokesperson for the emergency management office, revealed that Smith’s body was discovered inside the house around 7:30 a.m. by a rapid response team.
The circumstances surrounding Smith’s inability to escape the home in time remain unclear.
“This structure fire was not directly related to the ongoing wildfires,” Strope stated, referring to the media-reported wildfires in the state.
“However, I would be remiss if I did not say that Chief Smith, along with every other volunteer firefighter in this county and in his department, has responded for the last nine days actively fighting these fires,” he continued. “So, I think we all can say with pretty good certainty that it did have a role in today’s unfortunate incident.”
Hutchinson County Judge Cindy Irwin, the top executive of the county’s government, praised Smith as a courageous and dedicated public servant who prioritized community safety.
“It was his dedication to this duty that ultimately led to his death,” she said. “Just as we’ve come together as a community to support one another during these wildfires, we’ll continue to support the family of Chief Smith.”
Hutchinson County is also grappling with the ongoing Smokehouse Creek Fire, which has become the largest wildfire in the state’s history.
According to officials, two individuals have already lost their lives in the Panhandle fires.
