Cruz Champions School Safety In Impassioned Speech While Democrats Push For Gun Control
On Thursday, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor to defend the Second Amendment while advocating for school safety amidst calls from Democrats to pass gun control in response to this week’s tragedy in Nashville.
During his speech, Cruz reintroduced two pieces of legislation, the Securing Our Schools Act and the Protect Our Children’s Schools Act, which aim to improve school security and increase access to student mental health treatment. He has also introduced other pieces of legislation in the past, such as the Safe Kids, Safe Schools, Safe Communities Act of 2022 and the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act, in order to protect children in schools.
Cruz stated that he has been fighting for 11 years and has introduced legislation after legislation to lock up gun criminals. He emphasized that if anyone commits a crime with a gun, they should be prosecuted and go to jail, and those with serious mental illness or who are felons or fugitives should also be prosecuted if they try to illegally buy guns.
However, he pointed out that the Democrats repeatedly block those bills that aim to protect children in schools. He added that while the Democrats are eager to disarm moms who want to protect their children, they do not seem interested in a gun task force to lock up the murderers off the street. Cruz asked why it is an unreasonable question to ask for more police officers to protect our kids.
Senator Cruz also pointed out that Democrats’ solutions to gun control are not designed to stop crime, and urged the press to do its job and not let Democrats send fundraising emails to gun control groups saying that they are coming after the Second Amendment.
The senator’s passionate speech comes amid growing calls from Democrats to address gun violence in the wake of the recent Nashville tragedy.
