Cruz slams Dems’ attack on Justice Thomas.
Sen. Ted Cruz Slams Democrats for Smearing Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas
During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) called out Democrats for attempting to smear conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Cruz stated that they were “engaged in the same despicable tactics” that then Sen. Joe Biden used back in the early 90s to smear Thomas.
Recently, all nine Supreme Court Justices issued a rare joint statement, sending the message that they “unanimously reject legislation proposed by Democrats seeking to impose on the justices the same ethics obligations applied to all other federal judges,” according to the AP.
The Left’s Political Campaign to Smear Justice Clarence Thomas
“Senate Democrats and their lap dogs in the media are engaged in a two-fold political campaign,” Cruz said. “Number one, to delegitimize the Supreme Court of the United States because they are angry that there are a majority of constitutionalists on the court. But number two, very directly, this is a political campaign designed to smear Justice Clarence Thomas, and the reason is simple. The Left despises Clarence Thomas, and they do not despise him because he’s a conservative. The Left despises Clarence Thomas because he is a conservative African American.”
Cruz continued by quoting Thomas’ statement during his confirmation hearing: “if you are a free-thinking, African American, you will be lynched, destroyed and caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate.” He added that in three decades, “that hasn’t changed. It’s gotten worse.”
“And to be clear, here’s the Left’s view. I point to one article, just three weeks ago: ‘The Democrats need to destroy Clarence Thomas’s reputation. They’ll never successfully impeach him,’” Cruz said.
Democrats’ Attempt to Smear Thomas’ Reputation
Democrats have tried to portray a hit piece from a left-wing publication about Thomas’ travels as proof of some type of corruption because he did not report the trips. However, the letter from the nine justices last week appeared to address this issue, saying: “Matters considered here concerning issues such as travel, accommodations, and disclosure may at times have to take into account security guidance.”
Cruz also noted that Thomas’ 109 trips since 1991 were less than the number of trips that some liberal justices have taken. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed in 1993 and she took 157 trips while Stephen Breyer was appointed in 1994 and he took 233 trips.
