A catcher and Cuban baseball player, Iván Prieto González, decided to defect from Cuba and did not return after visiting Miami to play against the United States in the World Baseball Classic. He helped Cuban players warm up during the Sunday game, but did not show up for his flight back to Havana. Several Cuban players have made similar decisions in the past during international matches.

The defection comes at a time when the Biden administration is actively seeking to improve relations with Cuba. However, Republican Senator Marco Rubio has been critical of the Biden administration’s handling of this issue. He recently introduced legislation to prevent Cuba and other “sponsors of terrorism” from interacting with U.S. government officials.

During the Trump administration, Cuba was designated as a “state sponsor of terrorism” and American flights and cruises were banned from visiting the country. In contrast, the Biden administration has taken a softer approach despite the communist country’s imprisonment of political dissidents and censorship of the internet.
