Cyndi Lauper’s reason for initially rejecting ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ revealed.
Singer Cyndi Lauper’s Journey with “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Singer Cyndi Lauper revealed an intriguing story behind her hit 1983 single “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” Initially, she wasn’t interested in singing the song because it wasn’t written by a woman.
However, this single turned out to be Lauper’s breakthrough hit, reaching the number two spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became a worldwide sensation in the mid-80s and remains a well-known anthem today.
Lauper shared the story behind “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” in her documentary, “Let the Canary Sing,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
In an interview with People, the 69-year-old pop star explained her intention behind the song, saying, “I was trying really hard to make an anthem that would inspire women and open the doors to all women. Not just one group of women, but every little girl could see herself and realize that she too could have a joyful experience in life.”
“Every time we want to have fun, we’re whores,” Lauper expressed her frustration with men writing a song about women from their perspective.
Lauper’s producer at the time, Rick Chertoff, introduced her to the song, originally written and recorded by Robert Hazard. Lauper’s initial reaction was strong, as she reportedly said, “I would never do that f***ing song.”
In the documentary, Lauper discussed her efforts to give the single a more upbeat vibe by changing the lyrics and sound. She envisioned the song in a trumpet key, symbolizing the idea she wanted to trumpet.
Furthermore, Lauper aimed to showcase diversity in the music video, featuring women of all types. She even cast her real mother, Catrine, to play her mom in the video, believing it would bring mothers and daughters closer together.

She also mentioned the importance of family, as her sister Ellen and brother Fred appeared in the documentary, emphasizing the significance of their support.
