During the night of October 6, it is alleged that Patra released the venomous snake into the bedroom where Basanti and their 2-year-old daughter, Debasmita, were sleeping. The following morning, Patra claimed to have discovered his wife and daughter dead, with snake bites on their bodies, as reported by The Daily Mail.
Patra informed his neighbors about the incident, who then killed the snake and rushed Basanti and Debasmita to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths led to Patra’s father-in-law accusing him of the murders, prompting the local police to launch an investigation.
One intriguing detail that caught the attention of investigators was the fact that the cobra remained in the bedroom even after the fatal bites occurred.
Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena stated, “During interrogation, he [Patra] initially denied the allegation and later claimed that the snake might have entered the room on its own, but eventually confessed to committing the crime.” Patra was arrested a month after the incident due to a delay in gathering evidence against him.
The investigation into this horrific crime is ongoing.

The police arrested Patra on charges of murdering his wife and daughter by releasing a venomous snake into their bedroom.
